Built in 1904 by El Hadji Malick Sy and first enlarged in 1979 under his son Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy Dabakh, the Great Mosque of Tivaouane has undergone a new extension. The Caliph General of the Tijanis, Serigne Babacar Sy Mansour, announced its relaunch in November 2019, at the Burd ceremony.

Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé chaired the steering committee for the works. The Association Jama'atou Nour Assouniya (AJANA), which he also chairs, acted as delegated project owner. Work began in May 2021, after an assessment of the existing site. The enlarged mosque covers 24,000 m² and can hold 39,000 worshippers; its esplanade of 12,830 m² sets aside 10,000 m² for prayer.

The keys were handed over to the Caliph General on 14 September 2024, on the eve of the Gamou. On 28 September, Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé promised a full financial and technical report.
